What is natural skin care?

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

Taking care of your skin is an important aspect of self-care. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it is responsible for protecting us from external factors such as pollution, sun exposure, and harmful chemicals. Some ingredients applied to your skin will enter the blood stream and run through your entire body. This is why it is important to take care of our skin using natural and safe ingredients. Here I will talk about natural skin care and its benefits.

Defining natural skin care

Natural skin care refers to using products that are made from ingredients that are derived from nature. This includes plants, herbs, flowers, and other natural sources. Ideally natural skin care products do not contain synthetic ingredients or chemicals that may harm your skin.

In Australia the skin care industry is not regulated and by definition, if a product has even a small amount natural ingredients it can technically be labelled 'natural'.

In general, products that are marketed as "natural" in Australia are expected to contain a significant proportion of natural ingredients, with minimal synthetic or artificial ingredients.

However, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued guidelines for the use of terms like "natural" in advertising and labelling. According to these guidelines, any claims about a product being natural must be truthful and not misleading to consumers.

Natural skin care benefits

The benefits of natural skin care are numerous. Natural ingredients are gentle on the skin and do not cause irritation or inflammation. They also contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin. Natural skin care products are also eco-friendly and are less harmful to the environment. Here are some natural ingredients and their benefits for the skin:

  1. Aloe vera: Aloe vera is known for its healing properties. It contains antioxidants, enzymes, and vitamins A and C that soothe and hydrate the skin. Aloe vera is also effective in treating acne, sunburn, and inflammation. I use this in both the Salon Range eye cream and the Green Coffee Bean oil eye cream.

  2. Shea Butter: Shea butter is an excellent moisturiser, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging. It also contains vitamins A and E which can help improve skin tone and texture. Shea butter is found in a variety of my products including Magnesium Magic Balm, Lemon Myrtle Hand Cream, Insect Repellent Lotion and Sensual Body Butter.

  3. Tea tree oil: Tea tree oil is a natural antiseptic that is effective in treating acne, psoriasis, and eczema. It contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that soothe and heal the skin. Tea Tree oil is found in the Dead Sea Mud Mask.

  4. Chamomile: Chamomile is a natural anti-inflammatory that soothes and calms irritated skin. It also contains antioxidants that protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals. The entire Salon Range of face care contains Chamomile essential oil or hydrosol, as does the Soothing Baby Balm and Soothe and Protect Balm.

  5. Pink Clay: Pink Clay has natural detoxifying properties, which can help remove impurities and pollutants from the skin. The minerals in pink clay can help improve skin tone and texture, leaving the skin looking brighter and more radiant. The Salon Range Pink Clay Mask contains this divine ingredient.

When it comes to natural skin care, it is important to read the labels and do your research. Look for products that are made from natural ingredients and avoid products that contain synthetic ingredients, preservatives, or chemicals. You can also make your own natural skin care products using ingredients from your kitchen such as honey, coconut oil, and aloe vera.

Natural skin care is an effective way to take care of your skin without exposing it to harmful chemicals. Natural ingredients are gentle on the skin and contain antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that nourish and rejuvenate the skin. By using natural skin care products, you can achieve healthy and glowing skin that is both beautiful and eco-friendly.
