Turning Moisturising Into a Self-Care Ritual

For a long time, moisturising my face was something I did quickly. A step to tick off before moving on to the next thing. But over the years, I’ve come to realise that this small daily moment holds so much potential for care, presence and regulation.

Now, it’s one of the simplest ways I slow myself down.

Applying my face moisturiser has become a ritual, especially when I bring my gua sha or face roller into the mix. These tools don’t just support the skin, they invite me to pause, breathe and truly be with myself for a few minutes.

I begin by warming my moisturiser between my hands, taking a moment to connect with my breath before applying it to my face and neck. This alone shifts something. My body recognises that we’re not rushing.

Bringing in the Gua Sha

Using a gua sha encourages even more slowness. I start at the neck, using gentle upward strokes to support lymphatic flow, then move up to the jaw, cheeks and forehead. The pressure is light. There’s no forcing. It’s about listening to the skin rather than working against it.

As I glide the stone along my face, I often notice how much tension I’ve been holding, especially in my jaw and around my eyes. With each stroke, there’s a softening. Not just in my skin, but in my nervous system too.

Regular gua sha can help reduce puffiness, support circulation, encourage lymphatic drainage and improve skin tone. But for me, the greatest benefit is how it brings me back into my body. It’s a reminder to slow down and tend to myself with care.

The Gentle Rhythm of a Face Roller

Some days, a face roller feels like the perfect choice. Its steady, rhythmic movement is deeply calming. I roll from the centre of my face outward, letting the coolness of the stone soothe my skin and quiet my mind.

Face rolling can help reduce inflammation, ease facial tension and support product absorption. But beyond the physical benefits, it creates a moment of stillness. A gentle repetition that signals safety and calm to the nervous system.

More Than Skincare

What I’ve learnt is that these tools aren’t about perfection or adding another step to your routine. They’re an invitation. A chance to turn something you already do into a moment of self-care.

You don’t need to use them every day. Even a few minutes, a few times a week, can make a difference. Light a candle. Take a slow breath. Let the mirror be a place of connection rather than judgement.

In a world that constantly encourages us to move faster, this is a quiet act of resistance. Slowing down. Touching your skin with intention. Allowing care to be simple and present.

Your skin feels it. And so does your nervous system.

If you’ve been craving a gentler way to care for yourself, start here. With your moisturiser. And a few slow, loving moments just for you 💙
