Ingredient in the Spotlight - Hemp Seed oil

Hemp Seed oil is one of my favourite natural ingredients for conscious skin care. When I first started formulating in 1999, Hemp Seed oil featured in my Original Face Moisturiser and has done ever since. I have to admit I didn’t know much about it, but I was totally intrigued by all things hemp related at the time, so I was keen to use it. It took till many years later to really dive into understanding the benefits of Hemp Seed oil.

Benefits of Hemp Seed oil in Skin Care

Hemp seed oil is now a popular ingredient in natural skin care products due to its many beneficial properties. Here's why.

  1. Rich in fatty acids: Hemp seed oil is high in essential fatty acids like omega-3 and omega-6, which are important for maintaining healthy skin. These fatty acids can help to moisturise the skin, reduce inflammation, and protect against sun damage.

  2. Non-comedogenic: Hemp seed oil is a non-comedogenic oil, meaning it won't clog pores. This makes it a good choice for people with oily or acne-prone skin.

  3. Antioxidant properties: Hemp seed oil contains antioxidants like vitamin E, which can help to protect the skin from free radical damage and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

  4. Anti-inflammatory properties: Hemp seed oil contains compounds like gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which have anti-inflammatory properties. This makes it helpful for soothing irritated and inflamed skin.

  5. Hydrating: Hemp seed oil is a good moisturiser, as it helps to lock in moisture and prevent water loss from the skin. This can help to keep the skin hydrated and plump.

Overall, hemp seed oil is a versatile ingredient that can benefit a wide range of skin types. It's particularly useful for those with dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin, as well as those who are looking for a natural alternative to synthetic skincare products.

What MelissaMade products can I find Hemp Seed oil in?

As mentioned before, my first ever product the Original Face Moisturiser was when I first fell in love with Hemp Seed oil, but I now use it in many of my products.

Soothe and Protect Balm and the most recently released product Soothe and Protect Body Lotion both contain Hemp Seed oil. The main reason I include this delightful ingredient is that these products are created for sensitive skin, and so the Hemp Seed oil is helping to hydrate, reduce inflammation and soothe the skin.

Soothing Baby Balm is a gentle balm used particularly for nappy rash and dry skin on babies. The Hemp Seed oil is a great contributor in that it helps reduce inflammation and moisturise the skin. This is the second ever product that I produced, and it wouldn't be the same without hemp seed oil.

And the final product in my range with Hemp Seed oil is the Lemon Myrtle Hand Cream. For all of the reasons stated above, the hand cream is so popular because it hydrates, locks in the moisture and helps protect the often damaged and inflamed skin on the hands.

Did you know....?

The Hemp seed oil I use in my products is made from hemp seeds grown in WA, cold pressed by Harvey Hemp and distributed by Sunrise Hemp.

Alison at Sunrise Hemp creates balms made with Hemp Seed oil and recently added a Creamy Face Wash and Hemp Face Cream formulated and created by MelissaMade with Love for her brand to complement her ranges. It is an honour to create these products for her business and I love to see local businesses supporting local businesses.
